RTW/DM Online Program Modules, NIDMAR
The RTW/DM
Program, first developed in 1995 and continually revised since then,
consists
of 25 modules. The RTW/DM program emphasizes the essential
skills and knowledge
required to return to work individuals who have
incurred injuries or illnesses and
provides an introduction to the
competencies that are required to administer disability
management
programs. The modules are delivered via the Internet.
Each module requires 10 to 12 hours of study, consisting of reading,
self-tests,
participation in an online discussion forum, use of other
resources and completion of an
assignment. Modules focus on such
topics as return-to-work plans, job analysis,
workplace
modifications, assessment, assistive devices, organizational skills,
marketing,
information technology, labour relations, rehabilitation,
disability-related legislation,
program development and evaluation.
Secondary school graduation is a prerequisite for
the program.
Exemption or prior learning assessment credit may be given to those with
previous
education in a particular module subject area. The schedule for the
online
modules is designed so that the entire program may be
completed in one year (September
to June) or longer. To receive a
certificate of completion, participants must complete all 25 modules
within a three-year period.
The RTW/DM program is identified in the Occupational Standards in Disability Management as meeting the educational requirements for the Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC) or the Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP). Work experience and completion of a certification examination is required before the individual may be certified.
The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists have identified seven modules that are topic areas not covered in their educational programs but are required knowledge under the Occupational Standards for those choosing to write the professional certification examinations.
